Spiders

Last week we studied spiders. It was interesting how many spiders and webs we started to see once we paid attention.

Around Nubi we found a lot of tunnel webs, which I had never noticed before. Oddly enough we saw very few orb webs. But then at Loon, we saw this beautiful orb web being spun by this spider.

Sunrise Along the Kanc

I dragged everyone, including Grammie and Gramps, out of the house for a 6:15 am sunrise. I had the idea to drive to a viewpoint that looks east. Only as we were driving up it was getting lighter and lighter, and I was convinced we had missed it. We also realized once we were in the car that the gas light was on, which was a bit nerve-wracking as we climbed up for 20 miles or so. I was going to feel awful if everyone had gotten up at 5:30, then missed the sunrise, and then run out of gas!

But, when we got there, this is what we saw. The mist in the valley was really pretty.

Highland Games

The strength competitions are fun to watch.

The girls also enjoyed watching the dancing, although I find it awfully boring.

I loved the harp performances, though, and the girls wanted to stay for more.

Lee and Clara also tried this bungie contraption. Lee had a lots of fun but Clara wasn't able to do the jumping quite as well.

There's nothing like listening to bagpipes nonstop for three days. I woke up Monday morning with Scotland the Brave still going through my head.

Next year I want to attend the games on Friday. For some reason that's the only day they have sheepherding, which I think would be really fun to watch.

Finally, Mt. Chocorua

It's only taken us six years or so to climb Mt. Chocorua together again. And what a day we had. Since we were staying at Loon, we went up the Champney Falls Trail from the Kanc. It was faster than we imagined, and we reached the summit around 10:30 am. Which was fortunate, because as we descended we passed a steady stream of people climbing up.

I love how rocky and bare the top of Chocorua is. If you look closely, there's a woman standing on the summit behind Bridges.

The Flume

We went to Loon on Thursday night and spent Friday exploring. First we tried out Polly's Pancake Parlor, which was worth the drive because it's in a beautiful spot in Sugar Hill, NH. Later on we took the kids to The Flume, which was really cool. I don't think I'd ever been there.

Yes that's a boulder!

I love these rocks worn smooth by the water

Walking up the Flume

Trees are so cool

Hi Lee!

Jailed

We find Tiger in some odd places.

Today he had obviously misbehaved.
